My Breastfeeding Pet Peeves

My breastfeeding pet peeves – Jack Newman, MD

1. Nipple shields. Worse than useless because they do harm most of the time

2. Feed 10 minutes on each side

3. Feed on just one breast at each feeding. No, “finish” one side and if the baby wants more, give him the other.

4. There is nothing in breastmilk after 6 months (1 year, whatever)

5. Your 5 month old baby is not gaining enough so start formula. No, don’t give solids until 6 months. Aarrgh!!!

6. You’ve done enough by breastfeeding him for 3 months; now go to formula because it’s better.

7. You must feed formula to a year even though he’s taking a wide variety of solids in ample amounts

8. Premature babies cannot start on the breast until 34 weeks gestation.

9. Test weighing

Untuk pembacaan lanjut mengenai test weighing boleh baca laman web LLLI-Is Weighing Baby to Measure Milk Intake a Good Idea?

10. Premature babies all need fortifiers

11. Premature babies all need fortifiers even once they are breastfeeding well

12. Breastmilk in a bottle is as good as breastfeeding. No, actually, breastfeeding is much more than milk.

13. United States maternity leave. Piss poor. Canadian mothers have 52 weeks, paid, though at very low rates.

14. Formula company advertising. Unethical, untrue and malicious.

**Boleh ke entri saya mengenai pelbagai taktik dan strategi pengeluar2 susu tepung dalam mengeksploit tanggapan pengguna mengenai infant feeding, International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN)-Sekitar bengkel ‘Code of Ethics’.

15. The European parliament for agreeing with Mead Johnson that their formula is equal to breastmilk. If you live in Europe, let them know what you think about this.

16. There is no such thing as nipple confusion. How can anyone not see that giving bottles will cause problems? It’s not the baby who is confused. If the baby gets slow from the breast as they do in the first few days, especially if the baby is not latching on well, and then gets fast flow from a bottle, the baby doesn’t have to be Einstein to figure it out.
